How-to Choose the Right Piano Instructor

Looking for a piano teacher? As you research instructors here are a few tips to keep in mind.

First, evaluate if you are looking for an instructor who works best with beginners or advanced students. How often would you like to have lessons? At Harmony, we recommend weekly piano lessons, as this allows students enough time to practice between lessons, but not too much time where they become frustrated or discouraged.

One of the first steps before making your final decision on a piano teacher is doing research on music schools near you. Although virtual lessons have become extremely convenient, in-person hands-on experience is ideal. Are you looking for a music school that specializes in rock or improv, or are you looking for a classical approach or a combination of the two? Would you prefer the teacher come to you for in-home piano lessons, or do you prefer to go to the teacher? Decide which strategy works best for you and seek instructors who can accommodate that!

Once you’ve narrowed down your options of teachers you feel will work well with your style, schedule a trial lesson with the instructor(s) you’ve chosen. During this lesson, try to conduct a casual interview session with the instructor. Ask them any questions you may need answered before you make an arrangement with this teacher.

Some questions you may want to ask are:

  • What is your background in music?
  • How long have you been teaching?
  • Can you describe your instructional style?
  • Do you have any special certifications?
  • What are your expectations when working with students?

After participating in free trial lessons with a few instructors, reflect on whether or not this is the right fit for yourself. Do you feel comfortable at the lesson? Does the instructor offer a tailored and effective approach to build upon your skills? Is there a promising vision for growth? Make sure the instructor works well with you before making the arrangement and commitment to them.
